Oklahoma protection orders are intended by the court to protect you and your family against violent or harassing behavior from your spouse, ex-spouse, a current spouse of your ex-spouse, any blood relatives, adoptive/foster relatives, roommates, former roommates, someone with whom you have had a child with and your current or former significant other.

There are three (3) different types of Oklahoma protection orders; an emergency temporary order, an emergency ex parte protection order and a final protection order.

An emergency temporary protection order is, as at sounds, and emergency protection order that can be granted when the court is closed through an officer of the law. This emergency protection order is intended to be for short-term protection and can be filed without the knowledge of the abuser. Temporary refers to the fact that this order only lasts until the end of the next day the courthouse is open.

At this point you must file for an emergency ex parte protection order as well as the final protection order. The emergency ex parte protection order offers the same protection and autonomy as the emergency temporary protection order but you must file this one yourself while the courthouse is open. This order will protect you until the final protection order hearing which is usually scheduled within twenty (20) days.

The final protection order can only be issued after both parties have a chance to explain their side of the story in a court hearing. If granted, the final protection order offers more extensive protection and can last up to three years.
